Garden Program Seeks Sustainable Support Amid Growth

Lower Columbia School Gardens, having achieved its aim of establishing gardens in every elementary and middle school across Longview and Kelso, now confronts a funding dilemma as grant donors show decreased interest in maintaining existing projects, leading to a shortfall. The Cowlitz County Board of Health has recommended a $150,000 one-year funding proposal to the county commissioners to support the nonprofit's operational costs, amid concerns that government funding could negatively affect the program’s long-term sustainability. The initiative, which does not plan to expand further, relies heavily on community and volunteer involvement to offer valuable educational experiences in gardening and nutrition to students, highlighting the importance of such programs in enhancing student engagement and mental health.

Thousands of Washingtonians start their day with Good Day Longview

“Reading the newsletter has become a really positive daily habit for me. I read it while drinking my coffee and planning the day. It saves me a ton of time, but it's really enjoyable too. It's great to have the news filtered down to just a handful of critical events everyday that actually matters to me. I also like reading the community profiles. They interview people locally like teachers, politicians, and small business owners. It's hard to find this anywhere else.”

“I'm a senior citizen here in Longview, and this newsletter is like a lifeline. I don't have the attention span these days to read the paper, and Facebook is a mess. This newsletter keeps me informed, without taking the whole day from me.”

“I like how this newsletter keeps me connected with our community. It's great to have a dedicated source that focuses on what's going on locally. So many news companies are focused on huge attention-grabbing national headlines. But, besides the entertainment value, it's not really relevant to my day-to-day. Also it's great the newsletter is free.”

“This newsletter has been a game-changer for my business. It not only highlights local news but also features small businesses like mine. It's a great platform for local exposure.”

“I'm a parent, and it's apparent how busy that makes me. I LOVE newspapers (especially the smell), but I never have time to read it anymore. So thank god this newsletter exists, and I can read it in a few minutes. If anything is really critical or catches my eye, I can always spend more time reading into each piece of news, but it isn't usually necessary.”
